About the Event
Hello Mothers & Daughters of Atlanta!
Welcome to the first Annual 'Mothers and Daughters Cultural Awareness Workshop,' sponsored by We Have Us Corporation.
We are so delighted to bring this very special event to mothers and their daughters.
Why this event?
The goal of this organization is to help liberate oppressed people through education and resources. In alignment with this goal, we are offering a FREE cultural workshop for mothers and daughters.
As a Nigerian American Woman, I have, for many years, desired to bridge the gap between African culture and Black America. I figured, what better way to do this than through dance. Dance is a huge part of Black culture and African culture. I believe this is a great way for us all to reconnect to what we lost.
Growing up, my fellow black and brown classmates were not very receptive to those of us who were direct descendants of Africa. Later on in life, and after a lot of healing, I realized my classmates were simply misinformed about the true history and rich cultural found all over the continent of Africa. I realized there was a lack of cultural representation that extend beyond the borders of America.
I believe, once you find a connection to your true history, to what makes you great people, you begin to build confidence, liberating you and inspiring you to be the change you're looking for.
Culture breeds understanding and cultivates community.
Agenda:
This workshop will feature some very special guest, all the way from Nigeria, my younger sisters Onyi and Chinny Azubuike. These lovely ladies will lead a 1-hour lesson on the history of African Dance. This discussion will highlight the various dances you will typically see and how they connect to the occasion for which it is danced. In addition, these women will discuss how traditional African dance has matured into the new AfroBeat Culture.
Following this lesson, we will be led by the one and only Yaya, a professional Afrobeat instructor based out of Atlanta, Ga. Yaya has over 5 years of African and afrobeat dance under her belt and has choreographed dances all over the world. Yaya comes with lots of energy and funk and has clients all over who value her services.
We will conclude the evening with some traditional Nigerian Dishes catered by TessyToks Catering based here in Atlanta, Georgia. It wouldn’t be an African party without food would it! But... we had to bring the best of the best to this show. Be sure to check out TessyToks for your future catering needs.
Again, thank you for the privilege to serve the Atlanta community.
